Fantastic Memorial Day

"Are you moving?!?!" my hair stylist yelled as he ran across the street.

He'd been ordering coffee directly across from where we live and looking out the shop's window, when he saw me loading large boxes into the trunk of our car.

"Moving?  Me?  No," I replied.  "Just preparing to see the nephews."

If you've read my previous posts, you know how much I enjoy putting together packages of toys for children in our family.  On this past Memorial Day, my boyfriend and I made our way down to Orange County to visit with his nephews for the holiday,... and I'd prepared a pretty extensive gift for the boys,... a package that I'd worked on for months in preparation.

F4dvd I had discovered and purchased a DVD collection of the complete Fantastic Four Animated Series which had aired for two seasons in 1994 and '95.  The box set contains four DVD's of the cartoon that, although a little hokey, is perfect for little kids.

After getting the DVD's,... I started collecting.

You see, during those years in the 90's, action figures had been developed specifically for the cartoon, and although they're no longer available at conventional toy stores, I was able to find them at collector warehouses and online.---Oh, I didn't just instantly buy every figure I came across.---I looked around, bargain shopped, and even negotiated prices with certain sellers.

In a manner of two months, I had collected ever single toy produced for the cartoon... in mint condition AND unopened in their original packaging.---Spread out on the bed, the collection of toys looked pretty impressive.

Img_3107

After being certain I had all of them, I organized the toys into piles based on the episodes listed on the DVD box set, fast forwarding through the cartoons to make sure that particular characters made an appearance.

Img_3110

Next, I wrapped them and attached post-it notes to remind me which character was inside.

Img_3111

Finally, after double-checking one last time with the DVD's, I labeled each package with the corresponding episode...

Img_3112

...and organized them into boxes chronologically.

Img_3113

My idea was that the kids could watch an episode and then open the corresponding package (or vice versa).  I was fine with them doing it on their own time.  I didn't expect them to watch the full two seasons while I was there,... I was just happy to have the project completed and ready for delivery.

Img_3114

So, after loading the car and assuring my hair stylist that I wasn't leaving town, we drove down to see the boys,... and their little jaws hit the floor when they saw the packages.

Now, if you have any experience with a 7 year old and 5 year old, you can probably guess how well my plan went.

After explaining the procedure (of "watch an episode" then "open a package"), I let them each pick a package and then began playing the first corresponding episode.---After 5 minutes, I was faced with...

"Is this almost over yet?"

"Almost," I replied.  "How about I just fast forward to the part involving what I think is in your package..."

After opening their first figures to shouts of "Cool!" and "Awesome!", 5 year old Logan asked, "Can we open another one?"

"Alright," I answered, "But why don't I just play a snippet from the episode so you can see the characters in action."

Five minutes later,... "Can we open another one?"

Two minutes later,... "Can we open another one?"

About a third of the way through, I gave up showing them clips from the episodes and just let open whatever they wanted whenever they wanted, and... all the packages were unwrapped and opened within minutes.---It's what they wanted,... and yes, maybe the toys would become totally forgotten by Tuesday, but I didn't care... It was enough just to see them happy.

Now, please note that I tried to be a conscientious uncle and made sure that all the wrapping paper and extra packaging was put into garbage bags before any parents saw the mess,... and I let the boys keep one of the plastic tubs which easily held all of the figures (sans their packaging),... a tub that little Logan asked me to carry upstairs to safely store in his bedroom closet.

On Wednesday, when I got home from work, my boyfriend said that he'd just gotten off the phone with his sister.

"She said to tell you that, on Tuesday night, Logan asked if he could bring some of the Fantastic Four toys downstairs to their living room, and of course, she said yes.---Moments later, she heard this thud-thud-thud sound, and discovered it was Logan dragging an enormous plastic tub down the stairs, one step at a time.---I guess she hadn't seen how much stuff you'd actually given them.---She also said to tell you that, when Logan went to bed, he took no less than six of those figures to bed with him."

*Melt*

So, my hair stylist was very happy to hear that my boyfriend and I aren't moving,... but if I was, I know where I'd move to... A neighborhood closer to a plastic tub and a five year old boy who falls asleep holding multiple action figures.

Bingo THIS Wednesday!

One of the reasons I love WeHo Church is their strong desire to reach out to a variety of communities.  Thus, THIS Wednesday, I'm definitely going to...

Bingo

A suggested donation of $20 (which covers all games played) will go to the church's ongoing sponsorship of HIV+ children in South Africa (More info on their program here), and it should be a fun time.  Prizes include an Apple Ipod Shuffle®, Theatre Evening packages, a Robert Best limited edition Barbie and more!

If you're in the area, I hope to see you there!  :-)

Mint Not Happy With 'Silver Surfer' Coin

Oy.  Apparently, I missed this news item on Friday from the Associated Press, but since I mentioned this before, I should probably post the rest of the story.

From the Associated Press:

Mint Not Happy With 'Silver Surfer' Coin

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- A Marvel Comics hero is giving George Washington some company on the quarter, but the U.S. Mint doesn't think the stunt is so super.

To promote the upcoming film "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer," 20th Century Fox and The Franklin Mint altered 40,000 U.S. quarters to feature the character.

The U.S. Mint said in a news release Friday that it learned of the promotional quarter this week and advised the studio and The Franklin Mint they were breaking the law. It is illegal to turn a coin into an advertising vehicle, and violators can face a fine.

"The promotion is in no way approved, authorized, endorsed, or sponsored by the United States Mint, nor is it in any way associated or affiliated with the United States Mint," according to the release. The federal mint did not say whether the studio or the private Franklin Mint would face a penalty.

The altered coins are quarters honoring the state of California that entered circulation in 2005. They feature George Washington on the front, as usual, but a colorized version of the character on the back. All 40,000 are slated to be in circulation throughout the country by the end of Memorial Day weekend, and about 800 were released in each state.

Fans who find the customized quarters can enter a contest online to win prizes and a private screening of the movie.

The Franklin Mint mainly produces collectibles or commemorative medallions. Unlike its other commemorative coins, these aren't being sold, said Franklin Chairman Moshe Malamud. He emphasized that putting the character on the coin didn't alter the integrity of the coin.

"We are very, very protective of the currency of this country. Our goal was to enhance the coin," Malamud said.

Fox spokesman Chris Petrikin said that neither the studio nor The Franklin Mint intended to violate any laws or "suggest that there was any approval from the U.S. Mint or the U.S. Government" for the Silver Surfer coins.

"These are commemorative coins like many the Franklin Mint creates on a regular basis for various properties," he said. "We were confident this coin followed the same procedures and guidelines but will certainly take any necessary steps if advised otherwise."

Packages, Pirates, & Planes

Img_3090 It's mailing day!

Time to get out the toys for the next blockbuster movie, wrap 'em, and send them on their way to various nieces and nephews.

Oh, I sent out a mailing earlier this month, just prior to the opening of Spider-man 3

Img_3041

Those packages contained action figures & comic books...

Img_3047

...frisbees, and several other items labeled with Spider-man...

Img_3050

...Spider-man Easter eggs containing Spider-man candy,...  plush dolls for the "younger" nieces & nephews...

Unfortunately, I was running low on red wrapping paper, and so, I thought, "Well, Spider-man is red and blue, right?"  Thus, the packages were a combination of colors.

Img_3044

Img_3045

But that was over three weeks ago...

Last night, I was challenged with wrapping a different genre of toys.

Img_3085

The odd shape of certain packaging, in addition to wrapping them in tissue paper containing plastic gold coins (so that "treasure" falls out when you unwrap them) made them difficult to wrap, but I think they still turned out pretty cute.

Img_3086

So, I'm off to the post office.---Of course, the next batch of toys are "Fantastic Four," and as you might imagine, Uncle Jason has garnered quite an array of toys for that movie.

In anticipation, I got out the F4 stuff in our guest bedroom...

Matty_

Postage for all the Fantastic Four toys would be pretty expensive (especially for the vast majority to be sent to Illinois), and so, rather than mail them,...

*wait for it*

I bought a plane ticket.

Next month, I'll be delivering the toys in person.  :-)

Just ONE more... Please...

Chris Okay, okay, okay... I know you're "over" the F4 stuff...

Just let me say one more thing...

NBC has created a mini-site for the film which plays multiple never-before-seen previews of the movie...

And the first one is pretty skewed towards the gays.

:-)

See it here.

Be My Best Friend

You've probably already heard this, but... Twentieth Century Fox and the Franklin Mint have created an original limited collector's edition "Silver Surfer" U.S. quarter.

Ssquarter

According to reports, TOMORROW, a specially-outfitted fleet of of silver armored trucks will be distributing 40,000 of the Silver Surfer quarters across the United States and into circulation as legal tender (Yup, they're still worth 25 cents).

I.  Want.  One.

Find one for me, and... I'll be your best friend.  :-)

luv you/mean it,

Why make it hard to be nice?

Movie theaters have made it SO easy to buy tickets nowadays,... over the phone, over the computer,...

I can't remember the last time that I actually bought my ticket at the theater.  I usually buy them online.

But yesterday, I thought I might try something different.

You see, advanced ticket sales for the new Fantastic Four movie went online a couple days ago, but I'd held off making a purchase.---The theaters offering tickets on opening day gave showtimes starting at 11:30am and NOT for the usual 12:01am showings that have become common for most summer blockbusters (like Spiderman 3).

However, earlier in the day, I had read that 20th Century Fox had just given approval for theaters to do midnight showings due to popular demand.  (Why they didn't anticipate this, I don't know.)---Yet, when I logged on to theater websites, they still didn't list any midnight showings.  "Maybe they just haven't had a chance to list them yet," I thought, and I waited a few hours before trying again,... but still no luck.

So, finally, I decided to phone the theater.  I thought that maybe tickets for the midnight shows had gone on sale, BUT just hadn't been listed online yet.  "Maybe I can buy them over the phone," I thought.

So, I logged on to their webpage with the dates and showtimes on my computer screen and dialed their customer service number.  Unfortunately, the person who answered was... a little hard to work with...

Here's a transcript of my conversation with her.  You'll just have to imagine her condescending tone.

Her:  Good afternoon and thank you for calling  _______ cinemas.  How can I help you?

Me:  Yes... Hi... I just read that 20th Century Fox is allowing theaters to do midnight showings on opening day for the new Fantastic Four movie, and I was wondering if those tickets were available for purchase yet.

It's kinda early to be buying tickets for that movie, isn't it?

Oh, *heh* I know, but...

(Interrupting me) When does it open?

June 15th.

Oh, well, then, we won't know showtimes for that movie until at least a WEEK before it opens.

Really? Oh, um... okay... I just thought that, since I saw that your theater was selling advanced tickets online for the movie at other times that day...

(Interrupting me again) When did you say it opens?

June 15th.

Well, June 15th is a THURSDAY, and most movies open on FRIDAYS, so we wouldn't have tickets for that day anyway.

June 15th is a Thursday?

Yes, and my computer says that we're not opening any movies on that day.

Oh,... well... I'm sorry.

And even if we WERE opening a movie on a Thursday, we wouldn't know the showtimes until a week beforehand.---Is there anything else?

Well, um... no... but I guess... just to let you guys know... your theater's website says that you're selling tickets for Fantastic Four on Friday, June 15th, at 11am, 11:30, 2pm, 2:30, 4:40pm, 5:30, 7:30pm, 8:30, 10:10pm, and 11:20pm.

What?!?!  Let me check my computer again.

*moment of silence*

Okay, NOW, my computer says June 15th is a Friday,...

Computers can be frustrating, huh?

(Sharply)  What?!

I said that computers can be frustrating sometimes.

Oh.  Yeah, um... Anyway, yes, we're selling tickets for that movie on June 15th at 11am, 11:30, 2pm, 2:30, 4:40pm, 5:30, 7:30pm, 8:30, 10:10pm, and 11:20pm.

Okay, great!---Now, I was just wondering if, since Fox is going to allow midnight showings, if your theater was going to list, like, a 12:01am showing on opening day, like they did for Spiderman 3...

I don't see a 12:01 showing, sir.---All showtimes are clearly listed on our website.

I understand.  I just thought that maybe a midnight show hadn't been listed online yet?

Well, that's not the case.  Is there anything else I can help you with, sir?

Um, no,... Thank you for taking the time though... I'm really sorry for the bother...

Yes.  Good day, sir, and thank you for calling ________ cinemas.  *click*

She hung up before I could even say goodbye.

Oy.

As you might imagine, my first reaction, after hanging up the phone, was to think of all the things I "should have said."---You ever do that?  Brainstorm witty reactions to snarky comments AFTER a conversation is over?

Heck, DURING the phonecall, I had to bite my tongue SEVERAL times!  ("June 15th isn't a Friday?  Well, your website, which I'm staring at RIGHT NOW, says that the 15th is a Friday, and the calendar next to my computer screen says that the 15th is a Friday, and although I didn't get straight A's in graduate school, I'm pretty sure I can read a calendar correctly.  So, just trust me, you stupid b*tch.  June 15th IS a f*ckin' Friday!")

Of course, I'm glad that I didn't say those things.---I have no idea what might have happened to her prior to my call.  Maybe her car had broken down.  Maybe a death in the family.  Maybe both.  And the last thing she needed to hear was some comic book geek whining about a midnight showtime that doesn't exist.

And please believe me...  I had really tried to monitor my tone.---Seriously.---I worked to make sure she didn't think I was questioning her statements or abilities.  I really TRIED not to sound argumentative or b*tchy.---I mean,... she's answering the phone at a movie theater (probably not her dream career), and I know that she has no control over when movies open or are shown.---I never implied that she did.---I was just simply double-checking some information, and... *sigh*

Why'd she have to make it so hard for me to be nice?

I think that's the part that hurts the most,... and it scares me to think when I've been guilty of the same thing.---Oh, I'm sure, in those instances, I've justified my tone (to myself) by saying I was just "having a bad day" or "just stressed with work" or whatever, but... boy, that's SO wrong.---I truly believe that people are inherently good and that circumstances cause them to act badly, and... maybe that phonecall was a good reminder for me...

I need to try even harder to make sure that *I* am not one of those circumstances that cause someone to react negatively or... rehearse snarky things "they should have said" after our conversation.

You know,... come to think of it... I'm actually going to continue practicing things I "should have said" during my conversation with that woman... but I'll be practicing things to see... if I could have been nicer,... if I could have said anything that... might have let her know that I'm sorry she's hurt (without explicitly saying so, of course)... Maybe I could have said something that would have made her day and... made her be nicer to the next person she talked to... I don't know...

So, yeah... I'll keep practicing...

But I'm sorry...

I'm going to buy my tickets online.  :-)

THIS Sunday

First of all, this Sunday is Mother's Day, and so, if there is ANY woman in your life who has pushed a human being out of her body... you need to go buy (at least) a little card TODAY for her (if you wait till the last minute, it'll show... trust me... these females have created life---they can tell).

Secondly, if you're in the Los Angeles area, this Sunday night, you need to go see The Queers of Comedy...
Qoc
...consisting of Mikey Ryan Scott, Teddy Margas, and the legendary & luscious Cory Schneider,...

...at our precious Fubar, Sunday, May 13th, starting at 8:30pm.

Seriously, these guys are really funny (I mean it!),... AND lil' Cory... *sigh*...has been one of my biggest "bartender crushes" for years.  *double sigh*

So, THIS Sunday, first, recognize a mom, and second, see The Queers of Comedy.---These two simple actions combined will definitely make your life significantly happier and make next week's work-week just a tad easier to take.  ;-)

See you there!

M.M.M. - Spiderman 3

Dome

Okay, it's 2:41am as I type this, and so, I'll be brief.

I just returned from yet another excursion by the Midnight Movie Mafia © to see the 12:01am showing of Spiderman 3 at the Arclight Theaters in Hollywood, and... I think it was one of our most enjoyable conquests yet!

Our crew consisted of Chad, Dan, Pimpin', and J6,... a group who admittedly (myself included) don't update our blogs as much as we used to,... but whom I dearly love.---Even after not having seen some of them in months, it always feels like our last midnight movie was only yesterday.

When we arrived at 10:45pm, the legendary Cinerama Dome (where we'd be viewing the picture) was all decked out for the event.

Dome2 Dome3 Dome4

However, since we had time to kill, we ventured inside and up to the upstairs patio bar of the Arclight complex to catch-up with each other and watch the crowds arrive.

Drinks

One of the nice things about this particular movie complex is that, not only do they have TWO bars, but when you buy your tickets online, you can reserve your specific seat in the theater.  Thus, as you might expect, at 10:45pm, few people had arrived,... but just look at how things changed within a matter of 30 minutes (from our view on the patio).

11:00pm
Arclight

11:30pm
Arclight2

Around 11:50pm, we decided that, due to the large crowds we'd have to walk through, it was time for us to make our way down the stairs, through the lobby, and out to the Cinerama Dome to take our reserved seats.  (I took the next picture as I stood on the stairwell, looking down into the lobby.)

Downstairs_2

However, as we descended, I recognized someone special walking up the stairs.

Stairs

When I yelled, "Hey, Spiderman!", he actually posed!

Spidey

(I'll let you guess why he had no visible panty-lines. *heheh*)

As we made our way into the Cinerama Dome, multiple news crews were interviewing people as they came inside the theater.

Interviews
Interviews2

When we reached our seats, it was obvious that the crowd was ready for the show to begin.

Fans

One of the additional nice things about the Arclight Cinemas is that, although the tickets are a little more expensive, the theaters don't show advertisements prior to the movie,... and right before a film begins, an usher stands in front, welcomes the crowd, and introduces the movie.

However, this evening, no ordinary usher introduced the film...

Tobey

It was TOBY-freakin'-MAGUIRE!!!!!

Overall, the movie was great.  The company (as always) was outstanding, and I'm pretty sure that every time James Franco smiled into the camera,... he was personally smiling at me.
:-)

When's the next Midnight Movie Mafia excursion?---I'm not sure,... but THIS summer, we definitely have more opportunities than ever before.

And Toby, if you're reading this, please know that YOU are always invited.
;-)

Now, I gotta get some sleep...

peace,
your jason
